29 PALMS, CA explores and chronicles the dreams and fantasies of a group of drifters in a Southern Californian trailer community. The world depicted combines the notions of reality and fantasy and examines their resonance within the desert landscape and a transient culture. The narrative is constructed through the interpretation of real-life communications as the characters in the story try to make sense of these events. The characters are the exaggerated alter egos of the actors who play them and the story is, in part, a biography and social commentary on ambition, identity, and the eternal pursuit of something just out of reach.

Stefanie Schneider's new book, titled "Instantdreams" is an incisive selection of her most notable work made in collaboration with Lumas and celebrating it's 10 years of rocking the art market.
Schneider takes the American West as her inspiration to tell stories in that evoke ideas of masquerade and play. The intense gaze of her female characters undermine their playful edge suggesting an unnerving or tragic quality beneath the surface of these glamourous women. Collectively the works evoke love, pain, loneliness, alienation, rediscovery and suggest a social commentary on America; pointing out the cracks beneath the surface of the ’American Dream’.
Using expired Polaroid film Schneider’s images emphazise the sun drenched light of California and embody the cinematographic quality of the films of Quentin Tarantino or Oliver Stone. They're reminiscent of forgotten memories, dreams and chance encounters. Schneider is intent to illustrate the imperfect or "Wabi-Sabi" using the blemishes imperfections of the expired film.
Schneider has commented on the relationship between her bleached out Cali- fornian dream-scapes and the disintegration of a faded Hollywood dream, "Hollywood is the quintessential dream factory, many go there to follow their dreams, sometimes only to have them shattered." As a European living in Los Angeles, her work highlights aspects of melancholy and loss that lie beneath the glamour of of Hollywood.
Prepare to be enchanted.

The first complete overview of the work by Stefanie Schneider. With over 320 coloured illustrations on 200 pages. This collection of photos is a fascinating experiment - a series of pictures filmic in conception, unified by motifs of the American Southwest as experienced in old film noir about drifters, desert hotels, babes and vagabonds at large. Schneider, a German, absorbed this milieu in old American cinema and studiously arranged these images to appear off-hand, off-beat. Surreal use of expired film adds the element of chance, but also gives the project a gritty seal of authenticity - if these were real people they would have left such an apparently artless record of themselves. There is no script, and none is necessary - a primal tale with ordinary looking people with archetypical histories - they drink, make love in nameless hotels, stalk the desert under blinding sun, dance and carouse, and endlessly move on. The images say more the longer you look at them, calling out from what looks like a perpetual time warp, a liberating illusion of elemental vastness and endless time, with a touching, stark elemental quality that stops just short of banalty. Nothing beats the babes with the crazy wigs & toy squirt guns. (Wildenmut)

Stranger than Paradise, Schneiders jüngste Hollywood-Reminiszenz, erscheint rechtzeitig zu diesem Filmstart.

The work of Stefanie Schneider (*1968) moves between fiction and reality. In multi-part, film still–like sequences, the artist often stages herself, evoking memories of faded American myths through the borrowed aesthetic of expired Polaroid material. The series Wastelands portrays a young woman whose life is thrown off course by an encounter with a young man. Stefanie Schneider tells the story quickly, concretely, and cinematically—a tale of old habits, new desire, risk, violence, and transformation. Wastelands offers a fresh and laconic reinterpretation of the initiation into adulthood. Accompanying music for the book, composed and performed by Zoë Bîcat, is now available from us for the first time.
